Do you have a Gi that you love wearing the most? If so, why? And do you have a Gi in which you feel unbeatable — whether in competition or in training?

I have two Gis in which I feel extremely comfortable during training, and in which I personally feel like they fit me like a second skin, allowing me to move at my best and most smoothly. How about you?

Yeah, the Gold Calavera. The old one with the yellow accents is my favorite, but the current one with the red accents is good, too. It fits well, is very soft and comfortable and is built well. I'm a fan of gold weave gi's, but they can be a bit easier for your opponent to grip at tournaments than the standard pearl weave. What's your go to?

I have an old piranha branded gi that's super thick, probably about 950 gsm if I was guessing. I have some of the tatami tank gi that are 950 gsm double weave and they're about similar thickness but I like the old piranha one a bit more for a few reasons.

Kingz Balistico is my default. I like the ripstop pants. They don't bunch behind the knees like cotton. IMO. I do wear men's. Only way to get long lengths. Do GI manufactures believe all women are short?

Yeah, the difference between cotton and ripstop pants in BJJ gis is massive! Ripstop is so much lighter and dries faster, but some people prefer the heavier feel of cotton — especially for drilling. Kingz makes solid gis overall.

And you’re totally right about the sizing chaos. Most gi brands have their own weird A1L, A2H, A3F systems (or just A1-A4 with no further info), and two “A2s” from different brands can fit completely differently. There’s no real industry standard, so you almost have to try them or rely on community fit guides to know what you’re actually getting.

You are 100% on the same size in different brands fitting differently. A few things I learned when setting up my company, was that there seems no industry standard. I looked at about 5 of the major manufactures and they were all different, and varied both larger and smaller. The other aspect is the blend of the material they use. Some use blends that shrink less and others use blends that have less synthetic materials and shrink a ton more. I used some math and AI to grab comments, reviews and sizing comments on Gi’s then adjusted the sizes to the real average of all those that I used for my research.

OK so it sounds like we can build a website that translates gi sizes. While creating a standard size.
1. Pick any current standard give it a new name (IGSS - Internation Gi Standard Size).
2. Create a chart that shows where other brand sizes fall on the size chart.
3. Keep site up until the standard is fully adopted.

Anyone who has a gi will know if the next one they buy needs to the same, bigger, or smaller.
They can take use the current size they have agaisnt our chart and see what size they will need for any other brand.

Happy to start the process of settings this up if peeps want it.

OK so its in very early stages at the moment: https://gi-size.com/
I could have given you a lot of that information when I was doing the research for my brand i gathered it from many sources. I can share my size charts with you if you want.

Cheap Judo gi's made of 100% non-synthetic materials.

Although I must admit the made to measure Atama Gi jackets that I had made in Brazil back in the mid-nineties will surely outlive me, and may outlive my sons if the jackets are kept away from moths, despite lots of play.

Of course, if one really wanted to show off, Mizuno was the envy and aspiration of those that played Judo and Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in the nineties.
