Some people find Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Others are shaped by it. For me, it started on a quiet October evening in 2014 in Schwerte, where Coach Mirco Wendt had gathered a small group and laid out the mats. I had no idea then how much of my life would unfold within those boundaries. Not long after, I began a career in the prison service — a demanding world that runs on presence, composure, and the ability to manage confrontation calmly. BJJ gave me exactly that. In 2017, having completed my training and been promoted to tactical instructor, I began passing those skills on to my colleagues. The gentle art had become a professional tool. Progress on the mat rarely moves in straight lines. Blue belt in 2016, purple belt in 2019 — both earned in October, both marked by the kind of quiet consistency that shift work and real life allow: not always enough sessions, never a clean run, but always a return. Training stole hours from sleep, rest days, and routine. I gave them willingly. The years between purple and brown were the hardest. Life narrowed the windows. From 2024, weekend sessions with my training group were often all there was. Regularity became a luxury. Yet on 23 May 2026, Mark Picton — a friend who has walked much of this road alongside me — called me forward. Coach Mirco had set it in motion. I didn't see it coming. I don't think I was supposed to. What stays with me isn't the belts, though they matter. It's the mat in Schwerte at an ungodly hour. It's a sparring partner in Sheffield who wouldn't let me be lazy. It's the training hall in Indonesia, where the language was different and the language of jiu-jitsu wasn't. England, the Isle of Man, Indonesia — the art travels, and so did I. I am proud to be part of the Schwerte BJJ scene. Proud to have walked this path with Mirco — through the good runs and the gaps, through the ranks and the real moments that sit between them. The belt is a marker. The journey is the thing.
